Christmas help in Philadelphia 2026: Angel Tree, Toys for Tots, and the deadlines that matter
Christmas help in Philadelphia runs on fall deadlines, not December ones. The two biggest programs — Toys for Tots and the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree — take applications weeks before the holidays, and both are already open. Here is what is verified for 2026, program by program.
Toys for Tots — Philadelphia (applications close December 4)
The local Marine Corps Toys for Tots chapter (Philadelphia/Bristol, run by 3d Battalion, 14th Marines) opened family applications on October 1, 2026, and they close December 4, 2026. The program gives new toys to children up to age 11.
- Apply only through the chapter’s official site — philadelphia-pa.toysfortots.org. Toys are distributed only through that application system, and there is no walk-in signup.
- Decisions come by email and are final, so use an email address you actually check, and watch your spam folder in December.
- Nonprofits and community organizations requesting toys apply on the same site by November 6, 2026; toy box pick-up for approved organizations begins December 10.
Salvation Army Angel Tree — apply at saangeltree.org
The Salvation Army of Greater Philadelphia’s Angel Tree matches children with donors who buy their gifts, and its Adopt-a-Family program serves a limited number of families in extreme hardship. The Salvation Army’s application door is saangeltree.org — you enter your ZIP and the site routes you to your local corps’ program. One honest note: the Salvation Army’s Greater Philadelphia page does not post city-specific 2026 dates or age limits — each corps sets its own window, and they fill early in the fall. Apply as soon as you can rather than waiting for a posted deadline, and if the online route stalls, call the corps nearest you or dial 2-1-1 (PA 211 Southeast) for other local toy programs.
Have these documents ready
Programs differ, but holiday assistance commonly asks for: photo ID for the applying parent or guardian, proof of each child’s age (birth certificate or benefits letter), proof of address, and some proof of household income or benefit enrollment. Gathering them in October — not the night before a deadline — is the whole game.
Three December deadlines that pay better than any toy drive
While you are signing up for holiday help, three benefit deadlines land in the same weeks, and each is worth far more than a gift card:
- December 4 — Toys for Tots family applications close (above).
- December 15 — Pennie deadline for health coverage starting January 1 (for people without Medicare); Medicare’s own open enrollment ends earlier, on December 7.
- December 31 — the Property Tax / Rent Rebate deadline. Older and disabled Philadelphians can get $380–$1,000 back, and with the city’s supplement the maximum reaches $1,500 for the lowest income band. If you paid rent or property tax in 2025 and have not filed, this is real money sitting on the table — see our rebate page.
And all season long, LIHEAP is open for heating help. Run the checker once and we will screen the rebate, LIHEAP, SNAP, and utility discounts together — the best Christmas help is the kind that also shows up in January.
Not a government agency. Applying is always free at the official sites.
